Isolation: Poetry

Loneliness is an odd affliction,
slipping past your defenses 
like an anonymous wrong number,
the voice of a stranger jarring you out of routine

Then the hollow dial tone becomes
 the chorus of opportunities you'll never know,
worlds you will never travel,
and bridges you will never burn

You realize that you are just as random
as that phone call and even less substantial;
It's enough to make you wonder if you are even real:
