Just Live: Poetry

I wake up sometimes
To a small voice that says,
“I hate my life.”

To this voice I say,
“No, you don’t.
You loathe your situation."

In the ensuing silence,
I get up.

Other times,
I hear this same voice utter,
“I hate myself.”

To which I respond,
“No, you don’t.
You are aggitated
by external expectations
that don’t fit the nature
of who you really are."

With this quiet certainty,
I keep going

Then the voice
replies stubbornly,
“It's all for nothing.”

So I state with a shrug:
“That may very
well be the case.
But I guarantee
that if you don't try,
Nothing is all
you’ll ever do."

I just live.
