Listening to the Dalai Lama, II: Poetry

Note: I attended the commentaries given by The Dalai Lama at Radio City Music Hall this past weekend. It was an honor to sit among other souls full of compassion, seeking answers to enlightening ourselves and the world around us.
What follows are the thoughts I cataloged between and during the lectures:

He speaks,
and my mind feels fuzzy,
pressing against
the walls of my head,
as if with his words
alone I can expand

He speaks,
as if from a dream
that I've remembered
only vaguely until
this moment

From stanza 46
of A Commentary of
the Awakened Mind
by Nagarjuna:

Devoid of characteristics
and origination,
devoid of substantive reality
and transcending speech,
Space, awakening mind and enlightenment
possess the characteristics
of non-duality.

Your challenge to enlightenment
is the part of yourself
left unreconciled on
your journey
Where there is paradox
within is misunderstood,
there is a barrier:
Therefore,
"Know Thyself."

We must cease judging
our existence based
on our reflections in
the mirror
and the shadows we
leave behind in our pasts
We are as we are,
here in the present moment,
behind eyes that
peek from an internal
universe we alone can fathom

We so often destroy the
basis of our happiness
in trying to attain it.

~

We travel in
unnecessary circles,
here and there,
drowning in
unrivaled parallels
that give away
nothing at all

They say someone
must lead the way
out of darkness,
liberate yourself
and heal the world

~

We carry on
our shoulders,
the five burdens
(aggregates)
of existence:
form/matter,
sensation,
perception,
mental formations
& consciousness
They all must
be overcome

~

Although there
are no independent
personas,
as All is an
interdependent
network of One,
karma is
the non-tangible
result of
unconscious actions
within a
construct of sheer
thought

A baby cries,
I spy a mother
leave with her babe
from the teachings
And I sense here
a lesson,
that for all
our talking,
compassion and love
transcend even this

As long as
space remains,
as long as
sentient beings
remain,
so too shall I
remain to dispel
the miseries

Be the observer
of the observer
inside your mind
while functioning
in life;
your footsteps
are already known
through intuition,
and letting go
so that the highest
aim can take over,
your direction
will take you
towards the Light...

If reality is mind only,
then these precepts
we take on are only
a collection of stored
consciousness
that we tap into
within a mental matrix
we agree to
operate within

Whatever your religion,
whatever your inner creed,
take the philosophy
of Compassion
to live your life
towards the highest good
of all...
